Important Message from Medicare Revised
on Wednesday, 01 December 2010. All News Items
Per the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (“CMS”) the Important Message from Medicare (“IM”) is used to inform beneficiaries of their hospital discharge appeal rights. Hospitals began delivering a revised version of the “IM” for hospital inpatients to Original Medicare beneficiaries, and those enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, on July 2, 2007. With the revised version hospitals were required to deliver an “IM” within two days of admission and a second “IM” within two days of discharge.
As of July 20, 2010, CMS has updated the “IM” (Form CMS-R-193) and the “Detailed Notice of Discharge” (Form CMS-10066). In addition to requiring the beneficiary's signature and the date the form was delivered, this updated version now requires that hospitals note the time the “IM” was delivered.
CMS has indicated that the updated version may be used immediately. However, use is not required until April 1, 2011. At that time the forms with the 05/07 approval date will no longer be valid.
Further information and the newest versions of the forms can be downloaded from the CMS web site at: https://www.cms.gov/BNI/12_HospitalDischargeAppealNotices.asp#TopOfPage
