CMS Delays Signature Requirement for Lab Requisitions

In the 2011 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) rule, CMS finalized their policy to require a physician's or non-physician practitioner's (NPP) signature on requisitions for clinical laboratory diagnostic tests paid under the Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule (CLFS).  Note that for hospitals paid under OPPS, diagnostic laboratory tests are paid under the CLFS (status indicator "A").

The American Hospital Association, the laboratory community, and others have expressed their concerns to CMS regarding this policy. CMS recently issued an announcement of their intent to delay the implementation of this requirement to allow time for provider education. For the first quarter of 2011, CMS will focus on developing educational and outreach materials to educate those affected by this policy. Once the first quarter of 2011 educational campaign is fully underway, CMS will expect requisitions to be signed.
